Wingdings and Google AdSense

On the first of April this year the Google AdSense team announced that their advertising system aimed at publishers now supports the Wingdings font face. If you’re not sure what the Wingdings font looks like it is safe to say that the average person will find it completely unreadable, including you. It consists of a variety of shapes and symbols which make up the font set. Because of its lack of clarity it’s quite surprising to see it being made available to AdSense publishers.
Although Google suggests that it may work well with sites targeting cryptologists and carrier pigeons it may in fact work reasonably well on just about any topic site. The reason for this: ad blindness. The characters found in the Wingdings font are simply odd and could stand out quite well and be quite noticeable to your visitor. Whether or not this odd advantage of extra visibility will increase your click through rate is unknown particularly since the visitor probably won’t know what the advert is actually about.
This may not be the clearest improvement ever made to Google AdSense but it is one of many in an ongoing attempt to make the AdSense publishing system even better. With more and more fonts being introduced to AdSense more web site owners are able to better integrate the ads into their site and therefore start generating revenue from their hard work.
